23 Apr Liquid Cinema
When I shared a studio with Hans Zimmer there were always interesting visitors around, from world-renowned directors, producers, actors and musicians, to composers from every corner of the world. And one day just such a composer walked into my studio and said “I love what you are doing. Could you write a few similar pieces for my library?”
“What’s a ‘library’?” I asked.
And thus I began my involvement in the world of music libraries and licensing. That film composer had a very successful music enterprise, and my first pieces got a lot of plays all over the world. Next I created several titles for one of the UK’s top music library companies, followed by Germany, and finally Los Angeles. Along the way, I learned a lot of things that make music work better for editors and producers. I’d already written a lot of scores for film and television. But this music has its own demands.
A party in the Hollywood Hills inspired me to create LiquidCinema. I was chatting with one of the top film trailer editors in the business, and got into a lengthy discussion about trailer scores. I’d heard plenty of trailer music and trailer libraries, and it occurred to me that there really was a better way to create a library of music for trailers. I already knew how to score and produce tracks with a lot of emotion and impact. But knowing how trailer editors listen to music gave me the idea that became LiquidCinema.
Since that night I have been busy composing, arranging, producing, recording, mixing and mastering music from just about every conceivable genre I see working for the screen. I went to the best composers, songwriters, musicians, studios, singers, orchestrators, producers, DJs and engineers I knew, and got them to work with me on LiquidCinema. It makes a massive difference to work with inspired artists.
The results are some of the best tracks I have ever worked on. I’m really proud of this music, and all the amazing collaborators I have the pleasure to work alongside. The orchestral tracks are all done live – no samples here. Drums, vocals, guitars and basses the same. Amazing players doing what they do best. All mixed by one of Hollywood’s most in demand engineers.
